The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is a stock market index that monitors 30 large, publicly traded blue-chip companies on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. Charles Dow and Edward Jones established the index in 1896. Also known as the Dow 30, it is considered a barometer of the broader U.S. economy.
The Dow Divisor, a fixed constant, is employed to determine the impact of a one-point change in any of the approximately 30 stocks constituting the Dow. At times, adjustments to the divisor are necessary to maintain the Dow’s consistent value.
Unlike a weighted arithmetic average and without representing the market cap of its component companies, the Dow is calculated by summing the prices of one share of stock for all components and dividing by the divisor. Consequently, a one-point shift in any component stock results in an equivalent change in the index.
DJIA Price = SUM (Component Stock Prices) ÷ Dow Divisor
